Put an oven thermometer in my thermowell w/pilot on, after a few hours extracted it and read temp of 200 deg F.

Did some research on crock pots, discovered that the LO setting on a typical crock pot is 200 deg F. HI is 300 deg F.

Should be able I would imagine, to take crock pot recipes and pretty much go right into the thermowell with them without adaptation, gas off the whole time except for the pilot.

What say ye? I'm dying to try mom's famous salmon loaf crock pot recipe in the T-well.

    Lowracer,

It depends on how long it takes to get to 200 degrees. I think if it takes 2 hours you might have to worry about food contamination. The crock pot is a smaller vessel and pretty much gets to that 200degree mark rather quick. To be on the safe side you should start with the gas on and shut off.

Well we leave the T-well pilot on constantly so it's always at 200 deg in there. But yeah I'm a food safety freak (my big sister's a restaurant inspector, have heard all the horror stories) so probably would kick start with the gas on for a few minutes.

When I dig up the salmon loaf recipe and figure out how to adapt it for the t-well I'll post it here.

I was wondering the same thing. Looks like you beat (or should i say 'beet') me to it.

I think the real question is not how long the well takes to heat up to 200 degrees (empty) but how long it takes to heat a large thermal mass (ie water/soupy food) up to 200 degrees.

It really doesn't or shouldn't take long to heat up the air in the well chamber up that high. I would assume that crock-pots go on high-heat until their thermostats tell them to keep it on maintenance mode.

Kick starting the process with gas-on should be OK.

Now if only the well pots weren't made of aluminium! There are so many tomato based crock-pot foods :<

Has anyone come across a stainless pot that can be used in their 'well? I'm ok with sawing off the handles

It's an urban legend....aluminum is safe. There's a thread on this board that talks about the saftey of aluminum. Better yet....drum roll please.....take it from here lowracer.

I was reading the National Enquirer the other day, specifically a headline news article that said that Marilyn Monroe had a 'love child' named Norma Jean who now works as a flight attendant on an un-named airline, and that her father was none other than Elvis Presley.

Right below that article was a short article that claimed that the aluminum in tinfoil hats causes Alzheimer's disease, but that you're safe if you wear metallized mylar hats instead, and just as protected from the thought-control rays we all know are emitted by secret government transmitters located on cellular towers and powered by alien technology captured at Roswell in '47.

Aluminum cookware is safe, folks. The Alzheimer's connection is a myth, a red herring if you will. In over 40 years of looking really hard for it, the world's best scientists haven't found any link.

THe Thermowell, like the CHAMBERS oven, ramps up to it's proper temperature rapidly, due to the insulation.

I would think that you could take a crock pot recipe, calculate the time based upon the instructions in the Cookbook, burn the gas for the appropriate number of minutes, turn the gas off, and let it cook with excellent results.

Has anyone tried to put one of those oven bags inside the thermowell pot? That would ease in the cleanup and prevent the aluminum from contacting the food. Just curious..
